Abstract

<PICT:0749086/III/1> Thermoplastic polymers in the form of free-flowing powders are made in the apparatus shown by admitting monomer through inlet 11 into horizontally rotatable autoclave 1, into which loose metal balls or bars have been placed through recovery aperture 8, and polymerizing the monomer to the desired degree, whilst rotating the autoclave, heat or cooling being supplied as required by water jacket 2. Unreacted monomer is recovered via device 13, which consists of a cranked tube the inner opening of which is disposed above the level of the free-flowing powder and closed during polymerization by a sealing pad which can be ruptured when desired, by external gaseous pressure. Non-rotatable device 13, carries also instruments for controlling the reaction, and may further function as a safty device for excess pressure developed in the autoclave. The balls may be made of lead, lead covered with stainless steel, or wooden balls covered with lead.
