Abstract

748,457. Carburetters. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. April 30, 1953 [July 3. 1952], No. 12002/53. Class 7(3) A control mechanism for the throttle of a carburetter having a choke valve and a shaft for the choke valve, comprises a fast idle cam adapted to rotate on the shaft of the choke valve and yieldably connected thereto and a throttle lever rigidly secured to the throttle shaft and further includes a control lever rotatably mounted on the throttle shaft adjacent the throttle lever and adapted to engage the cam and a means forming a one way connection between the control lever and throttle lever and adapted to limit closing of the throttle during normal and fast idle operation. A fast idle cam 24 carrying a counterweight 34 is loosely mounted on a shaft 18 of a preferably off-set choke valve (not shown), and is operated by the choke valve by means of an arm 38 fixed to the shaft 18 and a spring 40 one end of which engages the arm 38 and the other end of which co-operates with a lug 44 on the fast idle cam. The cam limits the idling position of the throttle valve (not shown), by the engagement of a screw 61 carried by an arm 50 secured to the throttle valve shaft 16 with a. lug 62 carried by lever 56 which is rotatably mounted on the shaft 16. A finger 59 at the upper end of the lever 56 engaging the cam 24. The spring 40 permits the choke valve to be moved while the finger 59 is preventing rotation of the cam 24. The choke valve is controlled by an automatic choke unit (not shown), consisting of a vacuum actuated piston and a thermosensitive coil. Hot air is supplied to the unit from a point adjacent the exhaust manifold. When the throttle valve is moved to wide open position an arm 70 engages an ear 72 thus moving the lever 56 to the right and causing a finger 74 to engage the arm 38 (when the latter is in the position shown), and thus move the choke valve to partially open position. At the same time an ear 84 engages the stem 86 of a kickdown switch 26 for initiating a change in transmission speed ratio drive. A dashpot 28 retards the final closing movement of the throttle valve but an electrically controlled valve renders the dashhpot, ineffective under certain conditions. The acceleration pump is operated by the throttle valve by means of lever 88 and links 90, 92.
