Abstract
748,334. Briquetting and reduction of iron ores. WEBER, L. Sept. 10, 1951 [Sept. 16, 1950; July 9, 1951], No. 21334/51. Classes 72 and 82(1). A process for smelting an ore containing an iron oxide comprises the steps of separating the ore into finegrained constituents and lump constituents, intimately mixing the fine grained ore with fine-grained bituminous fuel, forming the mixture into briquettes, subjecting the briquettes to a heat treatment for at least partial reduction of the ore therein preferably by induction heating and subsequently charging the briquettes and the unreduced lump ore to an electric furnace for smelting. As shown, fine coal, fine ores, briquette binding agent and flux are supplied at 1, 2, 3 and 4 to a briquetting press C and the briquettes passed to low-temperature coking furnace A in which the heat-treatment takes place after which they are delivered to the electric smelting furnace E, lump ore and lump coal and flux being delivered direct to the furnace at 6. If desired, the fuel content of the briquettes may be greater than that necessary to reduce them completely, in order to eliminate the necessity for supplying lump fuel at 6, and in alternative process the pre-reducing may be effected in a coking head-piece of the furnace E heated by electric induction ; a suitable temperature for the pre-reducing heat treatment is 900‹C.
