Abstract
747,986. Towel rails. AUTOYRE CO. March 27, 1954, No. 9028/54. Class 52(5). [Also in Group XXV] A swinging towel rail 9 is connected to a wall bracket 4 by a friction hinge comprising a tubular socket 5 carried by the bracket, a hinge pin 10 extending at right angles from the arm, and a bushing 11 of resilient plastics material interposed between the pin and socket, the bushing being under radial compression and being in gripping or other anchoring engagement at one end with either the pin or the socket. The bushing is preferably cut from extruded polyethylene tubing. It is initially shorter than the pin and its end grips a groove 14 in the pin when it is drawn on to the latter. The bushing and pin are then inserted into the socket, when the bushing stretches to cover the pin. A flat surface 12 on the rail bears against the upper end of the socket, and the lower part of the pin bears in a reduced end bore 7 in the socket. A locking ring 19 is fitted on the end of the pin. In a modification the groove 14 is omitted and the upper end of the bushing is formed with a flange which seats in a counterbore provided at the upper end of the socket. The rail is of square cross section with concave sides. In forming the hinge pin, the rail is held in bending dies in such a manner as to form a bulge of metal which is then machined off to provide the surface 12.
