Abstract
747,964. Grinding apparatus. NEWTON, CHAMBERS & CO., Ltd. Sept. 1, 1953 [Sept. 1, 1952], No. 21997/52. Class 59. [Also in Group XII] Apparatus for removing in disintegrated form an annulus of iron oxide or the like from a circular container 5 has a cutting mechanism 20 arranged to engage the upper surface of the annulus over its whole radial width, and means for bringing about both relative rotation and relative axial movement between the container and the cutting mechanism, a scraping device being arranged to direct broken pieces of oxide or the like towards a central opening in the container. The container 5 of iron oxide (which has been used in the purification of gas) is arranged on a bogy 3 positioned on a turntable 7 which is rotatable by means of an electric motor 12 beneath cutting mechanism comprising cutters 20 carried by holders 64 depending from a horizontal member 19 of a frame mounted to be movable by four shafts 17 in a vertical direction so that the cutters 20 may be lowered and raised into and out of engagement with the surface of the oxide ; the cutting mechanism is supported by a frame 14 which also supports the turntable 7. Guide plates are provided to direct the pieces of oxide into the central hole in the oxide and a central opening 68 in the turntable 7. The gearing for lowering and raising the cutting mechanism is arranged so that the mechanism may be raised more quickly than it is lowered. The apparatus is associated with a travelling crane for handling the containers of oxide which are preferably made as described in Specification 748,008, [Group XII], the central inlet duct of the container being in two detachably connected parts, the upper of which is withdrawn when a container is to be emptied. In modifications, the turntable rises and falls while the cutting mechanism remains fixed vertically, the cutting mechanism revolves while the container 5 remains stationary, the cutters 20 are replaced by rotary cutters, and the reciprocation of the cutting mechanism or the turntable is effected by one or more hydraulic rams or by gearing.
