A method of manufacturing a filter element including a body and sealing means comprises inserting solid unpolymerized adhesive members between the ends of the body and sealing means and applying heat and pressure to the outer surfaces of the sealing means to press the sealing means and adhesive members against the ends of the body and form a bond between the sealing means and the body by polymerizing the adhesive members. Adhesive supplied in sheet form is cut into rings 15, Fig. 2, to fit the inside flat surfaces of end discs 13. A pleated filter body 11, perforate covering 12, discs 13 and adhesive rings 15 are placed in the relative positions of Fig. 2 and are brought together under heat and pressure. The temperature is such as to achieve polymerization of the rings 15 and their bonding to the end edges of the pleated body 11 and to the inner surfaces of the end discs 13. The temperature permitting the shortest polymerization period is preferred. The discs 13 may be of metal or paper, the adhesive being selected accordingly. In an alternative method unpolymerized liquid adhesive may be discharged in the shape of the ring 15 from a hopper on to a disc 13 on a moving belt (Fig. 3, not shown), the movement of the belt, carrying a series of discs 13, and discharge of adhesive from the hopper being synchronized. The filter element may be of the type disclosed in Specification 692,756, including layers of pleated units 24, 25, Fig. 5, the pleats in adjacent units being at right angles to each other. Solid unpolymerized adhesive inserts 27 are fitted inside a frame 26, the frame is fitted over the assembled units, and heat and pressure to polymerize the insert and to effect bonding are applied. The adhesive may be applied in liquid form to unfolded frames 26 on a moving belt and allowed to solidify on the frames.
