Abstract
In vacuum distilling apparatus and film evaporators wherein the liquid is heated while spread out as a film on the interior surface of a rotating vessel 3, a vertically disposed cylindrical ring 30 connected to the outside of the rotating vessel moves in a liquid seal 7 containing a liquid of low vapour pressure, which divides the interior of the casing 1 into two separate parts which have no communication with each other; the heaters 24 and the driving shaft 5 for the rotating vessel are disposed in the <PICT:0747620/III/1> lower part of the casing which is maintained under moderate vacuum (e.g. 2 to 5 mm. Hg.), and the film of liquid is in free communication with the upper part which is maintained under high vacuum (e.g. 10-3 mm. Hg.). A heavy hydrocarbon or silicone oil may be used in seal 7; preferably the same liquid is used as in the diffusion pump connected to socket 22. The temperature of the liquid in seal 7 is maintained low by means of cooling-jacket 8. Water is introduced into the jacket through pipe 9 and is discharged through pipe 10. The distilland is introduced on to the inner surface of vessel 3 through pipe 13; it ascends this surface as a film, and is partly vaporized. Residual liquid flows over the top rim of vessel 3 into trough 14, and is withdrawn therefrom through tubes 15 and 17 by centrifugal pump 16, which is driven by shaft 5. The vapours are condensed on stationary condenser 11 which is made in the form of a hollow conical ring. Cooling liquid is introduced into the condenser through pipe 20, and is discharged through pipe 21. The condensate is collected in trough 12, and is removed therefrom through pipe 19 by pump 18, which is also driven by shaft 5. The apparatus may be used for the concentration of aqueous solutions of thermallyunstable substances. In this case, the condenser 11 is not operated, a pressure of 5 to 50 mm. is maintained in the distillation space, and the water-vapours are withdrawn via socket 22 to a surface or contact condenser of conventional type.
