Abstract

A periodic sampling device for extracting a constant mass of gas per unit time from a continuous gas supply comprises two relatively rotating contacting members 3, 7 having sampling channels 8, 10, respectively, communicating periodically during rotation and thermal means 13 for displacing one of the members and varying the channel section to compencate for temperature-volume changes in the gas. An electric motor 5 rotates the sleeve 3 within the sleeve 7 so that gas pumped into pipe 17 and escaping at 9 is periodically led to a gas analyzer connected to the flexible tube 12 when the channels 8, 10 coincide. The sleeve 7 is carried on bimetal strips 13 the outer ends of which flex downwardly on a knife edge 14 on an adjustable ring nut 18 when the gas temperature rises and increase the overlapping area of the channels. In another embodiment the sleeve 3 is lowered by the bimetal strips and the gas enters through ports in sleeves 3, 7. The members 3, 7 may be relatively rotating discs, one of which is displaced by the bimetal. Specification 714,898 is referred to.
