Class 87(2) A machine for making rubber-soled boots comprises a sole mould formed by hinged pieces 51, 52 which may be opened or locked shut by levers 61, 57, Fig. 1, containing a base plate 40, Fig. 9, the mould being mounted on a base 10 supporting a column 13 having a headpiece 15 which is rotatable, for removal of the boot from last 23, into the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1. A'column 19 with a last 23 on its lower end passes through the headpiece 15 and may be moved vertically, so as to enter and close the lower mould, by rack and pinion means. The last may be locked at any position against upward movement during its traverse by a sawtoothed gear 28 co-operating with a pawl 29. To increase the pressure the base plate 40 is moved up, e.g. using a hydraulic jack or by lever means 47 moving a cam. Alternative means of fixing the column 19 in any vertical position are shown in Fig. 5 and comprise a cone 30 in a seating 31 which is normally free to rotate but may be tightened by movement of lever 36 which unscrews threaded muff 37 and causes hub 35 to press head 34 of screw bolt 33 fixed in pinion 25 which is attached to the cone 30 and hence moves it into engagement with the seating 31. When making boots in which the rubber part extends above the toe, hinged extension pieces 62, 63, Fig. 9, cover such parts. The last may have a detachable heel part (Fig. 8, not shown) which is moved forward obliquely by a lever system to facilitate removal of the boot. The dies may be electrically heated.
