Abstract
<PICT:0746183/III/1> A method of cooling gases containing naphthalene and/or tar vapours comprises causing the gases to flow horizontally in a single pass and substantially in a straight line over generally vertical cooling tubes through which coolant is directed in a zig-zag path in contra-flow to the gases the length of the tubes being such and successive reversals of the flow direction of the coolant being sufficiently frequent as to ensure that tarry condensates running down the outside of the tubes can reach the bottom of the tubes without solidifying or becoming so viscous as to adhere to the tube. In apparatus for carrying out the method, the gases enter a chamber 1 at an inlet 2 and flow in substantially a straight, horizontal path over tubes 6 to the outlet 3 of the chamber and the cross-sectional area of the gas passage decreases in the direction of gas flow, either by a progressive decrease in the cross-sectional area of the cooling chamber or by a progressively closer spacing of the tubes. The tubes are divided into groups through which the coolant flows serially in zig-zag fashion and extend between headers 7, 12 each header being divided by baffles 13 into compartments whereby the tube groups are serially interconnected. Condensates flowing down the tubes are collected in troughs formed by shallow transverse walls 16. An outlet 17 from each trough leads to a common discharge line 18 for the condensates. Specification 681,251 is referred to.
