In order to reduce transfer lag in a pneumatic transmission system consisting of a measuring element at one end of a single transmission pipe and a control, recording, or indicating instrument at the other end, a compact apparatus having an impedance substantially equal to that of the transmission pipe is included, the apparatus comprising a first pneumatic feed-back device providing a proportional control action, and a second pneumatic feedback device including a resistance or a combined resistance and capacity. In an embodiment, the pressures on the two sides of an orifice plate in a flow line are applied differentially to a diaphragm 16, and any resultant movement thereof is applied through a cantilever 19 to act on a spring-hinged arm 22. The latter acts adjustably on a spring baffle plate 25 controlling the discharge of pressure air from a nozzle 26, the latter being supplied from a pipe 32 past a restriction 33. The control pressure so produced upstream of the nozzle acts on a diaphragm 31 to position inter-connected inlet and exhaust valves 35 of a volume amplifier controlling the connection of the pressure supply 32 to a pipe 34. The output pressure in pipe 34 is transmitted through a line 12 to operate, in this case, an indicator 13. The output pressure supplied to the indicator is made proportional to the input signal applied to arm 22 by feeding the output pressure to a bellows 39 acting on arm 22 in opposition to the input signal. The transfer lag in line 12 is neutralized by combining an initial amplified surge with the output signal, and this is obtained by a further feedback of the output signal to arm 22, but this time the feed-back is through a resistance 38 and into a capacity constituted by a bellows 40. The transfer lag of the resistance-capacity combination approximates to that of the line 12. The resistance and capacity may be split into several units in series, and the resistances may be variable and each may be similar to the resistance disclosed in Specification 670,419. In an alternative arrangement, the two feed-back bellows are applied to a baffle and nozzle relay at the receiving end of the line 12. Specification 672,879 is referred to.
