Abstract

Ferrous articles are treated by passing them through an aqueous solution having a pH of 1 to 2 and containing 1,2 to 4,8 per cent by weight of phosphate radical and 0,3 to 1,5 per cent by weight of chromium in the form of ions of a chromium compound in which the chromium is hexavalent, maintaining the solution at a temperature between 100 DEG and 160 DEG F., the articles being treated electrolytically as cathodes, and then removing them from the solution and drying the film of solution adhering thereto. Steel strip is passed by means of rollers through a bath containing the solution and provided with anodes, the strip being connected as cathode by means of the rollers. On leaving the bath it passes between squeegee rolls to remove excess solution, and then through a hot air drier, after which it is cut into sheets which are lacquered, enamelled or painted. The solution may contain phosphoric acid, or sodium, potassium or ammonium phosphate, and chromic acid or a soluble dichromate such as sodium dichromate. If neither phosphoric or chromic acids are used the acidity may be obtained by the addition of nitric acid. The solution may also contain 1 to 4 per cent by weight of sodium nitrate or 0,1 to p 0,4 per cent by weight potassium permanganate. The strip is immersed for a time of 0,25 to 2 seconds.
