Abstract
745,639. Couplings for conveying ultrasonic wave energy. SPROULE, D. O., and GLASS DEVELOPMENTS, Ltd. Aug. 12, 1953 [July 16, 1952], No. 18018/52. Class 40 (4). [Also in Group XXXVIII] A flaw-detector using ultrasonic vibrations comprises two wedges 1 and 2 with surfaces in contact, the other surface of one wedge 2 being placed in contact with the workpiece and the other surface of the other wedge 1 being in contact with the transducer, which may be a piezo - electric crystal covered by a hemispherical metal screen 9; the wedge 1 is rotatable through an angle of 180 degrees about an axis perpendicular to the wedge surfaces in contact so as to vary the effective angle of the wedge system between the sum and the difference of the two wedge angles. Relative movement of the two wedges is communicated to a cylindrical casing 10 by means of a bevelled planet-wheel 12. A scale may be marked on the casing 10 in order to give, in co-operation with a pointer on one of the wedges, an indication of the direction of the ultrasonic beam in the workpiece. This indication may alternatively be given, as shown, by a lever 20 pivoted on a ring 17 which moves round with the casing 10, the angle of elevation of the lever 20 being controlled by means of a pin 23 moving in a groove 24 in the hemispherical screen 9.
