Abstract
745,521. Discharge tubes. EDISON SWAN ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. May 21, 1953 [Aug. 11, 1952], No. 20188/52. Class 39 (1). A photo-electric multiplier cell of the kind comprising a plurality of secondary electron emissive dynodes D1-D9, Fig. 1, without auxiliary electrodes therebetween, connected respectively to stepped voltage stages 1-9, has one or more or all dynodes formed with a normal working area BC, Fig. 2, having a relatively high secondary electron emission and an area AB having a relatively low emission, and has the dynodes so positioned that in operation a voltage between a first dynode so formed and the succeeding dynode which is less than the normal working voltage causes the electrostatic field between said dynodes to deflect the incident electron beam to said first dynode towards the low emission area so as to reduce the secondary electron flow to the succeeding dynode and hence increase the voltage between the dynodes. The section AB of the dynode D8 can be coated with molybdenum or magnesium and the section BC can be coated with caesium treated antimony. Grid G, photocathode K and collector anode A are provided.
