Abstract
745,379. Catheters. MANSELL, E. A., and FRANKLIN & SONS, Ltd., J. G. Jan 26, 1954 [Jan. 29, 1953], No. 2642/53. Class 81(2). [Also in Group V] In a method of producing a catheter body, having a solid distal end, from liquid composition, the composition is caused to set in a space having the desired form of the catheter and defined between a former and an outer wall which extends beyond the tip of the former to an extent according to the required length of the solid end. The solid distal end, which may be cylindrical, bulbous or olivary, and the catheter tube are made in one piece. The catheter c is made from latex (which may be prevulcanised) or an organosol e.g. polyvinyl chloride powder in a liquid plasticizer. The catheter c is made by introducing a former A of the same shape as the internal shape of the completed catheter C into a tube B of the same internal shape as the external shape of the completed catheter c and filling the intervening space with latex or an organosol coagulant such as 50 per cent aqueous solution of calcium nitrate may be added to the latex or coated on the exterior of the former A and/or the interior of the tube B. Alternatively gelling is brought about by the application of heat. The distal end of the former A does not reach the end of the tube B so that a solid distal end is provided on the completed catheter C. After the latex or organosol has gelled, it is withdrawn on the former, dried and provided with an eyelet D in the required position. If required, subsequent coatings of latex or organosol may be applied by dipping. The open end of the finished catheter C may be given a flared formation by suitably shaping the former A and the tube B. Specifications 284,608, [Class 87(ii)], and 330,520, [Class 70], are referred to.
