744,327. Making catheters. RUESCH, W. June 24, 1953 [Jan. 15, 1953], No. 17456/53. Class 87 (2). In the process of manufacturing a catheter, a tube, extruded from natural or synthetic rubber or other plastic substance, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, in a manner which leaves one end of the tube closed, is placed in a die 6 with its open end at the place where the die enlarges to a conical cavity 7, an arm 5 supporting the die is lowered until the tube end is pushed over a core with a conical portion 3 corresponding to the cavity 7, and high frequency potential is applied between the die and the core resulting in the end of the tube being moulded to the funnel shape required. The closed end of the tube is moulded to a curved form by high frequency heating when the tube is inserted in a two-part mould with a core inside the tube, potential being applied between the mould and the core.
