Abstract

Vinyl acetate is polymerized in solution using an o-alkoxy-benzoyl peroxide as catalyst in the absence of oxygen. Catalysts specified are o-methoxy-, o-ethoxy- and o-propyloxy-benzoyl peroxides and the solvent may be methanol, ethanol, iso- or n-propanol or -butanol or their esters, such as methyl or ethyl acetate, or benzene or toluene. The polymerization may be stopped by the introduction of oxygen or air, or by using only a minute quantity of catalyst in which case the polymerization may be restarted by adding more catalyst, either the same peroxide or benzoyl peroxide. The examples describe polymerization in sealed tubes and under inert atmospheres and the polymers obtained give, on saponification, polyvinyl alcohols of higher polymerization degree than normal.
