[Also in Group XXX] Apparatus for submerged arc welding on stationary vertical plates includes a carriage, movable along the plates, carrying an electrode, flux supply means and means for supporting the flux adjacent the vertical plates during welding which comprises a horizontally moving endless belt pressed at its lower edge against the vertical plates so as to be driven thereby as the carriage moves, the belt having adjacent its lower edge, on the inside, a longitudinally extending rib which is engaged by the means pressing the belt against the work. A carriage C travelling along the top of tank shell S under construction supports on a cross rod 34 between depending bars 33, a chassis 32, hooked at 35 over the cross rod 34, which in turn supports at its lower end on a vertical pivot pin 31 a frame 30. Around large horizontal end pulleys 26, 27 journalled in the frame 30 is guided the lower edge of an endless flux supporting belt 20. The inside of the belt, adjacent its lower edge, has formed integral therewith or secured thereto a longitudinal rib 21 which is engaged by spring-urged rollers 36 carried by the frame 30 to press the lower edge of the belt against the vertical wall of the tank S. A sealing strip 23, Fig. 13, may be secured to the outer part of the lower belt edge. The upper and central parts of the run of the belt adjacent the work which support the flux F are flattened by a roller 42 on the frame 30 to lie on a supporting tray 28 secured to the frame 30. The other run of the belt is also supported by a tray 46 and tensioned by a roller 47 engaging the rib 21. The belt may be frusto-conical in shape, Fig. 16. Flux is fed to the belt by a pipe D and electrode material N fed from a supply 50 carried by the chassis 32. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 669,890.
