In submerged arc welding apparatus for welding upright workpieces, e.g. the vertically adjacent plates of a storage tank, comprising a carriage mounted adjacent the work for horizontal movement relatively thereto and means on the carriage for feeding an electrode to the work, rollers on vertical shafts on the carriage are provided over 'which an endless resilient belt is trained to engage the work beneath the electrode to support against the work flux fed on to the belt, the belt having a bevelled outer upper edge. The carriage formed by a framework of members 16, 23 is moved over a rail 15, temporarily fixed to the upper workpiece 10, by two grooved rollers 22 fixed to the member 16 by adjustable gearings, one roller 22 being driven by a motor 24 on the frame. Rollers 63 space the bottom of the frame from the lower workpiece 11. Electrode wire 32 is fed from a reel 29 on the frame through a hose 30 to a holder 31 which is adjustably mounted on a plate 43 in turn adjustably mounted on a plate 44 secured to a member 23. Two rollers 50, 51 with toothed lower flanges are mounted on the plate 43 with a rubber &c. bevelled belt 53 around them in contact with the workpiece 11 so that movement of the carriage results in rotation of the belt. Flux is fed from a hopper 46 about the electrode end to be held against the work by the belt. A scraper 55 removes flux adhering to the belt and a hopper 57 directs falling flux ,into a container 60. The centre of gravity of the carriage is so located that the engagement of the belt 53 with the workpiece 11 biases the carriage from a freely hanging position.
