Abstract
745,071. Luminescent material; discharge lamps. PATENT-TREUHAND-GES. FUR ELEKTRISCHE GLUHLAMPEN. May 8, 1953 [May 21, 1952], No. 12922/53. Class 39 (1). A luminescent material, particularly for use in a low or high pressure mercury vapour discharge lamp, contains 15-60 per cent, preferably 30 per cent, magnesium fluorogermanate or magnesium titanate or magnesium arsenate activated with tetravalent manganese to be excited by long wave ultra-violet light, particularly 253.7 or 365 mÁ, admixed with an alkaline earth halogen phosphate, particularly 20-85 per cent, preferably 40 per cent, calcium halophosphate activated by manganese and antimony, with or without 20-85 per cent, preferably 30 per cent, calcium-strontium silicate activated by manganese and lead to prevent reduction of the tetravalent manganese. The magnesium fluorogermanate can correspond to the formula 3-3.5MgO . 0.5- IMgF 2 . 1GeO 2 : 0.01Mn, the calcium halo-phosphate to 3Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 . 1CaF 2 + up to 10 per cent by weight Mn + from 2-6 per cent by weight Sb, and the Ca-Sr-silicate can contain 1-5 mol. per cent SrO, about 1-3, preferably 2.4, per cent by weight of Mn and about 1-3, preferably 1.6, per cent by weight of Pb. The luminescent material can be coated on the inner side of the bulb of a low pressure mercury discharge lamp or on the inner side of an outer bulb enclosing a high pressure mercury vapour discharge tube, as shown in the drawing. A mica screen 7 protects the lamp base from heat. The discharge tube 1 is provided with argon and a quantity of mercury such that a pressure of about 3-5 atmospheres is developed during operation. Dimensions of the lamp are given. The outer bulb 8 may be partly spherical or pear or ellipsoidal-shaped. The lamp can be in the form of a mixed-light lamp having an incandescent coil within the outer bulb as a series resistance for the high-pressure discharge. The high-pressure tube and the coil are rated in such manner that the luminous flux from the tube is more intense than that from the coil.
