Abstract

744,879. Steering wheels. COOKE, G. H. Oct. 22, 1954 [Nov. 13, 1953], No. 31610/53. Class 80(4) [Also in Group XXXI] A vehicle steering wheel which is slidable in its own plane out of the driving position to facilitate entry to and exit from the vehicle comprises a rim 1 across which are attached two parallel circular-section bars 2 slidable in grooves in the steering column head 5. The bars are retained in the grooves by a cover plate 3 which is secured to the head 5 by screws so that the wheel may readily be completely removed. A spring metal catch plate 11 attached to the cover plate has a detent passing through a hole therein to engage a recess in the bar 2 and lock. the wheel in its driving position, a lip 13 facilitating release of the detent. Alternatively, a catch may be provided on the head 5. A further pair of grooves 4a may be provided in the head so that the wheel may be removed and replaced at right angles to its former position. The sides of the head 5 and plate 3 are curved to fit the rim 1 when the wheel is moved to its extreme positions. The steering wheel is applicable to vehicles such as motor' cars, motor boats and aircraft. The Provisional Specification describes also a construction wherein a steering wheel rim is pivoted to an arm on the steering column so that the wheel may be swung in its own plane out of the driving position.
