Abstract

Procaine penicillin mainly in platelet form is produced by crystallizing the procaine penicillin in the presence of a water-soluble ethyl methyl cellulose ether. Preferably a salt of procaine such as the hydrochloride, phosphate or acetate is reacted with a salt of penicillin such as an amine or metal salt, e.g. the sodium salt, in aqueous solution in the presence of 0.05 to 1 per cent and especially 0.1 per cent (w./v.) of ethyl methyl cellulose ether. The concentration of penicillin in the reaction solution should not exceed 60,000 units per mil. The crystallization may be carried out in the presence of buffers such as sodium citrate and preservatives such as phenyl mercuric nitrate or sodium metabisulphite. Specification 681,140 is referred to.
