Abstract

744,154. Portable turning-apparatus. PASS & CO., Ltd., E. Sept. 8, 1954 [June 17, 1953], No. 16653/53. Class 83 (3). A pipe-cutting machine comprises a carrier ring 10 for external attachment to a pipe 14, an annular tool-head support-ring 11 drivably rotatable on the carrier, and a number of radial tool-carrying heads on the support, each tool 25 being associated with a spring-loaded follower which bears on the pipe periphery. The ring 10 is attached to the pipe 14 by a split collet 12. The ring 11 is made in halves which are first located in position by dowels 21 and then bolted together. Teeth on the ring 11 engage a worm 17 on a shaft 15 in the ring 10. The shaft 15 is rotatable directly at one end, or through gearing at the other. Each tool 25 is radially adjustable by a screw 29 on a slide 24 carrying a bevelled follower 26, or roller, and spring-urged towards the pipe. A kicker 34 is adjustably mounted on the ring 10 so that, as the ring 11 is rotated by hand or power, the kicker engages notched wheels 31 on the ends of the screws 29 to advance the tools. The tools may cut off the end of the pipe or machine a groove, the bottom of which conforms to the shape of the pipe.
