Abstract
Titanium tetrachloride is purified by refluxing the crude tetrachloride in the presence of animal waxes in the proportion of not more than 0.2 per cent based on the weight of the crude tetrachloride. The waxes employed are wool fat (wax) spermaceti, and beeswax and the tetrachloride may be refluxed therewith at from 134oC. to 138 DEG C. for about two hours after which titanium tetrachloride vapours are distilled and condensed to form water white titanium tetrachloride. The still residue is a granular substance containing rutile, anatase, free carbon and the impurities, chiefly vanadium in the form of VCl3 or VOCl3 which may be recovered from the residue by water leaching.
