Abstract

744,018. Travelling wave tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Aug. 14, 1953 [Aug. 19, 1952], No. 22492/53. Addition to 706,958. Class 39 (1). In a travelling wave tube as claimed in the parent Specification and having a metal envelope and in which energy is reflected by the delay line due to mismatching, and in which the input line 5, Fig. 1, and metal envelope 1 together form (undesirably) a feedback line liable to be excited by the reflected energy so as to cause self-oscillations one or more metal members within the envelope surrounding the delay line and/or the input coaxial line are provided for preventing the " feedback line " from functioning in this manner by shielding or short-circuiting action. The metal members may comprise conductive baffles 12, 13, 14, as shown, contacting line 5 directly and metal envelope 1 via fingers 15. The structure short-circuits the " feedback line ". There may be any number of baffles. In a modification the line 5 may carry bands provided with spring contacts which engage the metal envelope, Fig. 3 (not shown). The spring contacts and bands may be separate members or formed integrally and the shorting members so formed are spaced apart by less than a quarter wavelength. In a further modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the input and output matching sections 9, 10 are joined by a conductive cylinder surrounding and shielding the helix. In the tube of Fig. 1, 5 and 6 are input and output coaxial lines, and the wave propagating structure is a helix carried by a quartz tube 8 or by ceramic rods bonded thereto. The helix supporting tube may have on its inner or outer surface or in the material of the tube itself lossy material 11, such as colloidal or moulded graphite. The helix may be replaced by a disc loaded guide. Cooling fins 4 are provided. The mismatching producing the feedback energy may be due to imperfections in the delay line, imperfectly matched lossy material applied to a specific region of the line, or mismatching at the output end of the line. Specification 740,852 is referred to.
