Abstract

A method of taking a sample of molten steel comprises drawing a small quantity of the molten metal into a small bore refractory tube, quickly cooling the tube and the metal, breaking the tube to release the clean pencil of steel formed, drying, breaking, crushing, and sieving the metal, and subjecting the sieved powder to chemical analysis. The metal may be drawn into the tube by creating a suction therein and the tube containing the metal may be quenched in water or oil fully to harden the metal and to break the tube. The final crushing of the hardened steel may be performed by a pestle and mortar made from a similar steel, or of tungsten carbide or like hard material, or of steel having a very hard surface. The powder passing a 40-mesh sieve is then subjected to chemical analysis.
