A jack or prop comprises a fine adjustment screw jack 38, 41 mounted on a pair of telescopic tubes 35, 36 which can be locked in a number of extended positions by a pair of half annuli 37a, 37b which rest on the top of tube 36 by means of tapered grooves 48 and engage a selected groove 45 in tube 35.
