Abstract

743,637. Sewing machines. UNION SPECIAL MACHINE CO. Dec. 15, 1953 [Dec. 17, 1952], No. 34566/53. Class 112. [Also in Group XXXII] Feed by dogs and needle; upper and lower shafts, connecting.-The invention relates to means for preventing the transmission of torsional vibrations to gears 55 to 58 in the drive to stitch-forming elements 51, 52 of a sewing machine. A needle bar 29 is carried in a frame 32 pivotally mounted to the machine frame at 33. The bar 29 is reciprocable by the action of a connecting rod 24 driven by a main drive shaft 15. An eccentric 45 rigid with the shaft 15 imparts oscillatory movement to the frame 32 by acting through a rocker rod (not shown), arm 40, sleeve 20 and arm 36. The shaft 15 is connected by a gear train 64, 63, 62, to a shaft 59. Torsional vibrations are present in the shaft 15 due to the periodic accelerations of the needle bar. A flexible connection provided between the gear 62 and the shaft 59, constitutes a torsional - vibration damper (see Group XXXII). As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the gear 62 is connected to the shaft 59 through resilient rods 91, 92, and a disc 88 rigid with the shaft 59. The disc 88 may constitute a fly-wheel. In a modified construction (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) the rods 91, 92 are replaced by an annulus of rubber which is coaxial with the shaft 59 and is bonded on one side face to the gear 62 and on the other face to the disc 88. The shaft 59 drives rotary hooks 51, 52 through the respective pairs of gears 55, 57 and 56, 58. Up-and-down motion of a feed dog is derived from an eccentric 72 on the shaft 59. Feedrocking movements of the feed dog are derived from a feed bar 71 operable by a shaft 76, oscillated by the action of linkage 78, 79, coupled at 82 to the arm 40. The flexibility of the coupling between the gear 62 and the shaft 59 should be such that the resonant frequency of the shaft 59 and gears 55-58 should be “ to ¥ of the speed of the shaft 15. U.S.A. Specification 2,329,484 is referred to.
