[Also in Groups XXIV and XXXI] A telescopic car aerial comprising units 6, 7 and 8 is erected and retracted by means including a flexible cable 11 and an actuating arrangement having a rotatable member 19 with undulating contact portions for gripping and operating the cable. When not erected the aerial units are stored inside the car body 2 in a container 3. The bottom of the container 3 is coupled by screw threads to the guide tube 12 whose other end is detachably secured to the housing 15 of the actuating arrangement. A further blind ended tube 16 on the other side of the housing 15 is provided to contain the free end of the cable 11. The inner rod 8 of the aerial is connected to the flexible cable, which may be either of metal or plastic, by a coupling 10. All the parts are readily separable for ease in servicing. Various types of actuating mechanism are described. In one form the rotatable member 19 comprises a thick disc with an undulating circumferential groove in which the cable is pressed by a spring-loaded idler wheel 20 of appropriate shape (Fig. 2, not shown). The idler wheel may be replaced by a pressure plate and the thick disc by a grooved pulley with modulating side walls, Fig. 3 (not shown). It is possible to form the member 19 as a pulley with the undulating side walls consisting of springy sheet metal members having a number of radial slots so that it resiliently grips the cable (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown). An alternative device for resiliently gripping the cable consists of a split pulley the two undulating sidewalls 21, 22, of which are urged together by springs 26. In a different form of actuating arrangement the cable passes between two pulleys 19 and 20 which as shown cut away in Fig. 7, have undulations in the bottom of their grooves to grip the cable. In all the embodiments it is preferred that the projecting parts of the undulations on one side of the cable path face the depressed parts of the undulations on the other.
