Abstract

743,182. Electric indicating system. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. July 30, 1953 [July 30, 1952], No. 19200/52. Class 40(1) For measuring the speed of a running filament Y. a pistol grip 21, Fig. 7. is positioned so that the filament or yarn passes between a light weight pulley 1 and guide pulleys 13, 14. The trigger 17 is then retracted to move the guide pulleys to the position shown dotted through spring biased links 18 and slides 15. 16, so that the yarn engages a substantial portion of the periphery of the pulley 1 and drives it at a speed proportional to the yarn speed. The pulley 1 drives a commutator 6. Fig. 4. which alternately charges a condenser from a battery and discharges it through an ammeter M which deflects according to the pulley and hence the yarn speed. Alternatively, the condenser G, Fig. 5 may discharge into a larger condenser LC which discharges continuously through a resistor R in series with the meter M to give an average speed reading over a fixed time period. Various condensers may be provided and adanted to be switched into circuit selectively. Fig. 6 (not shown). to cater for different speed ranges. Current is led to the commutator 6 by spring biased contact strips through rotatable ball races, Fig. 2 (not shown). Ari eddy-current or photo-electric type of tachometer may be used in lieu of that shown.
