Abstract

A cast iron melt having sufficient magnesium to give an as cast nodular structure, is contacted with a refractory substance which includes a magnesium type flux. Such fluxes are borax, boric acid, alkali metal fluoborates and double salts of magnesium chloride and an alkali metal chloride. The melt may be flowed over the treated refractory substance, or the latter may be used as a lining in the melt handling apparatus, or the refractory may be of a perforate form and placed in the mould so that the melt flows through the perforations.
