Abstract

742,473. Boot-making machines. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd. Sept. 8, 1953 [Sept. 17, 1952], No. 23295/52. Class 17 (1). [Also in Group XXX] Apparatus for conveying articles to a series of operating positions comprises an endless chain and carrier plates movable in an endless guide channel, a pawl pivoted to each carrier plate and spring urged towards the chain being engageable with recesses therein and disengaged therefrom by an arm movable into position to engage the pawl, means associated with each plate to disengage the pawl on the following plate when two plates contact, an escapement lever connected by linkage to the arm and movable by a linkage when the arm is in a lowered position to maintain disengaged a carrier plate already disengaged by a preceding carrier plate arrested by the arm. The conveyer comprises carriers 10, Figs. 1 and 5, having four rollers 11 running on parallel endless tracks 12, and supporting a pivoted pawl 39 urged by a spring-pressed plunger 42 to engage a pin 40 in recesses 4 in every fourth link of an endless chain. The chain has guiding ramps 5 adjacent every recess and rollers 7 running on tracks 6. To hold the carrier at rest at an operating position the pawls are held out of engagement with the chain by a pair of ramps 59 or lever arms 67, Fig. 5, operated through suitable linkage by a pedal 47, 65 and which engage and raise the pin 40 from the chain. A carrier which contacts a stationary carrier is disengaged from the chain by a ramp 44 on the stationary carrier. The ramp engages the pin 40 of the contacting carrier and raises it from the chain. When the pedal 47, 65 is depressed the ramps 59 and levers 67 are lowered, allowing the pawl 39 of the stationary carrier to drop and the pin 40 to engage the next recess 4 on the chain and convey the carrier to the next operating position. The pin 40 of the succeeding carrier being disengaged from the ramp 44 engages the chain and moves to the operating position where the pin is disengaged from the chain by the now raised ramps 59. As shown in Fig. 5, escapement levers 70, pivoted at 71 and pivotally connected to the levers 67, are raised to engage the pin of the adjacent carrier when the pedal 65 is depressed and hold it out of engagement with the chain until the first carrier has been moved away to prevent more than one carrier being released with a fast moving conveyer. At the first position as shown in Fig. 1, a pedal 47a operating the ramps 59 simultaneously operates a pair of ramps 59a, 59b on the lower run of the chain. Lasted boots are mounted on the carriers by means of a support with a base 16, and a member 17 mounted on a pivot 18. The member 17 has teeth which engage a spring-urged bar 21 attached to a handle 24 which is lowered to disengage the bar from the teeth and allow adjustment of the angular position of the member 17. A member 30 is mounted on the member 17 by engaging bolts in holes 26 and 27. The member has holes for spring-urged plungers 30a connected by levers 33 to an operating handle 36, which is depressed to release the plungers from the last.
