An attachment for a solid fuel grate of the open type comprises in combination a metal front part adapted to be placed in contact with the grate surround, a rearwardly projecting metal part adapted to lie within the grate above the fuel and to serve the dual purpose of reflecting radiant heat from, and directing air downwardly through, the fuel, a damper for regulating the air flow through the fuel, and a bimetal strip for automatically adjusting the position of the damper in response to temperature variations. The attachment shown comprises a front plate d provided with an opening in its lower part, an integral structure consisting of a rearwardly inclined plate e and inclined side plates f being secured in the opening. Supporting means comprise legs g adjustably or otherwise secured to cover plates h which are at the outer sides of plates f and form the side walls of a duct i disposed above the plate e through which combustion products flow to the chimney via an exit opening j. The air flow through the fuel is regulated by a damper n which comprises a flanged metal plate secured at its centre to a bi-metal strip o supported by brackets p on the upper wall of the duct i. A plurality of slots p<SP>1</SP> allow an initial adjustment of the damper relatively to the opening j. Alternatively the strip o may be carried by adjustable supports the positions of which are variable under the control of a knob or lever at the front of the attachment. An electric heating element v mounted in a plate r, Fig. 4, may be fitted to the attachment the plate r being provided, for this purpose, with downwardly extending tabs t for interengagement with slots s<SP>1</SP> formed in flanges s provided at the lower edges of plates f.
