Abstract

[Also in Group XXVIII] In a machine, such as a printing-machine, in which two or more suction devices are served by only one single-stage suction pump, means is provided whereby the air pressure in one suction conduit can be regulated independently of that in the others. As shown, conduits 4, 6 are connected, respectively, to the suction and pressure ports 3, 5 of a rotary pump 2, both conduits leading to a rotary valve 7 operable by a lever 8. With the valve open, the conduits communicate with further conduits 4a, 6a leading to sheet-feeding apparatus such as a separator 41 and blower 42, and when the valve is closed, compressed air from conduit 6 is allowed to escape through a venturi tube 9. A second suction conduit 13 leading from a suction roller 12 joins the suction conduit 4 through regulating valves 14 and 11 which are of substantially the same construction. The valve 11, Fig. 2, has four internallythreaded sockets in which the conduits 4, 13, and a valve bearing 16 are screwed. A valve 18, having a spindle 17 guided in the bearing 16, is pressed by a spring 20 against a seating to close the suction conduit 13, the screwed bearing 16 serving to regulate the pressure in the valve. The vacuum created in the conduit 4 overcomes the pressure of the spring 20, so that the valve 18 is opened and suction established to the roller 12. The difference in the intensity of the suction in the two branches 4 and 13 depends upon the pressure exerted by the spring 20. In the valve 14 the socket facing the spring-pressed valve 18 is connected to atmosphere through a pipe 40. In a modification, an additional opening which normally serves for the influx of air into the pump 2 is connected by a conduit to the conduit 13 between the valves 11, 14. In this case, when the valve 7 is closed, venturi tubes allow both the pressure and suction conduits 6, 4 to communicate with the atmosphere.
