Abstract
In a furnace process for the production of carbon black where the black is agglomerated and separated from the hot furnace gases in a plurality of dry separators the black separated in the separators is <PICT:0742187/III/1> collected and conveyed to a central collector by a portion of the hot furnace gases before or after some or all of the black has been separated therefrom. The hot effluent of gas, water vapour and suspended carbon black from furnace 2 may be cooled in quench section 6 equipped with a water jacket and direct water spray 7 and passes to discharge conduit 13, where it may be further directly or indirectly cooled at 12. In passing along discharge conduit 13, the effluent passes through electric precipitator 16, cyclones 17, 18, 19, and bag filter 21, where carbon black is collected before reaching outlet 14. Some effluent at about 210 DEG F. say 475 DEG F. is withdrawn through pipe 38 to pipe 31 and is pumped by 32 to collect the carbon black flowing from separators 16-19 and 21, through star valves 22 and outlet conduits 23, 24 and 26-28, and carry it to one or more dry separators 33, 34 where the carbon black is again separated and passes through surge tank 49 and micropulverizers 51 to collection. The gas from separators 33, 34 may be recycled through pump 32 after a sufficient amount has been removed through bleed conduit 41 to compensate for hot gases added through 38 to maintain the temperature above the dew point say 175 DEG F. The gas from bleed conduit 41 may be passed to conduit 13 or vented at 46. Sonic separators or wet separators may also be used in the system but in the case of wet separators the carbon black is not collected therefrom by gas, but the resultant slurry may be passed to the spray 7. The preferred arrangement is shown but the effluent gas may be withdrawn at any point between the furnace 2 and the outlet 14, while the bleed conduit may be connected to any point of conduit 13 upstream of at least one separator. The conduit 31 should afford a continuous cycle but may be used as a once through system by valve 36. The pump 32 may be in any position in conduit 31.
