Abstract

742,056. Capacitors. BRITISH DIELECTRIC RESEARCH, Ltd. June 26, 1953 [June 27, 1952], No. 16296/52. Class 37. [Also in Group XV] Electrostatic capacitors are produced by a process involving the production of thin metal coatings of predetermined shape on the soluble surface of a non-metallic support by depositing metal on the soluble support surface by a thermal evaporation process, applying to those parts of the metallized soluble support surface from which the metal is to be removed a solvent for the soluble support surface and subjecting the metal deposit to a wiping operation to remove the metal from the parts of the support surface attacked by the solvent and leave the remainder adhering to the support surface. The solvent may be applied by printing with a patterned metal roller or by stencilling. The soluble support surface may. consist of (1) a cellulose nitrate coating on paper, and the solvent used to attack this soluble support surface after metallizing being ethyl acetate or a mixture of ethyl acetate and amyl acetate, or (2) an ethyl cellulose coating on polystyrene film, the attacking solvent in this case being ethyl alcohol or other suitable solvent for ethyl cellulose. The process may be applied to the production of metallized sheet or metallized films of insulating material in which areas of metallization are required to be spaced apart by non-metallized areas and alternate areas of metallization are required to be electrically connected in parallel by strips of metallization, so that by winding a length of such paper or film into a convolute roll a capacitor is obtained with two series of concentric electrodes.
