Abstract

A synthetic resin composition suitable for application to a metallic support as a thin surface layer to form a bearing, comprises a highly polymeric material such as a synthetic resin or cellulose derivative having a mica filling and being formed with pores into which lubricant can penetrate. The bearing is preferably made by coating the metallic support with the polymeric material containing a mica filling, the material being applied in the form of a highly viscous dispersion, e.g. in acetone, which on hardening forms a surface layer containing pores caused by splitting off the mica particles. Pores may also be produced by beating the dispersion before application. The synthetic resin is preferably a phenol-aldehyde resin, a monohydric alcohol-treated phenol resin, which is soluble in benzene hydrocarbons, a urea-aldehyde resin, an ethoxylene resin or mixtures thereof or a phthalic acid-glycerol condensation product. Minor amounts of thermoplastic resins such as vinyl ester resins, acrylic resins, cyclohexanone resins, coumarone resins or silicone resins, or cellulose derivatives, may be incorporated, and the composition may also contain fillers such as pulverized clay, chalk, lime powder, and steatite.
