[Also in Group XXXIX] The core of a magneto-strictive transducer suitable for subaqueous echo sounding, comprises a stack of laminations each having at least two stems L, Ll and an integral radiating cross-piece E, the mass and elasticity of the portions of the crosspiece C<SP>1</SP>, C<SP>2</SP> and C1<SP>1</SP>, C2<SP>1</SP> on either side of a stem being so chosen that the core exhibits only a single resonant frequency. The free-ended cross-piece portions C<SP>1</SP>, C1<SP>1</SP> may have different elastic constants or smaller dimensions than the portions C<SP>2</SP>, C2<SP>1</SP> linking adjacent stems. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, the rear faces of the cross-piece portions C<SP>1</SP>, C1<SP>1</SP> are outwardly tapered. Alternatively, a rectangular cross-piece, Fig. 5, may have a saw cut B in an intermediate position between the limbs which extends to about 0.6 of the cross-piece depth. This feature may be applied to cores having cross-pieces at both ends, Fig. 6 (not shown). A modified core may comprise a composite stack of T- and #-shaped laminations, the T-shaped laminations being arranged in pairs with their cross-pieces almost abutting.
