Abstract

740,945. Medical treatment chambers. LYBURN, E. F. ST. J. July 16, 1954 [Oct. 13, 1953], No. 28199/53. Class 81(2). A treatment cabinet comprises a hot chamber enclosing the patient up to the neck and a cooling chamber enclosing the neck and head. The main chamber 10 is made with insulating walls, of which the front 6 and top 7, 8 are hinged to allow the patient to enter. Moist heat is obtained by boiling water in a container 12, heated by an immersion heater. The patient's neck extends through a hole 9 into an auxiliary chamber through which air is continuously circulated by fans 38, 45 and cooled by the heat absorber 37 of a refrigerator. A drain 18 is provided for the removal of moisture and additional heat may be provided by electric heaters 57. In order to produce effective cooling of the neck and carotid sinuses a freezing pipe 61, from the refrigerator, may be bent into a U-shaped loop around the back and sides of the neck.
