[Also in Groups I and XXII] A horseshoe nail comprises a stem 1 and head 1a on which is deposited, by oxy-acetylene welding, a portion 2 of wear-resistant and non-slipping material. Such material includes hard-metal carbide, e.g. tungsten carbide grains embedded in steel, and is supplied from a welding-rod consisting of a steel tube containing fused particles of the carbide and a fluxing agent.
