Abstract
The invention comprises complex chromium compounds containing at least one chromium atom to two dyestuffs molecules of dyestuffs of formula <FORM:0740589/IV(c)/1> where X is H or halogen, R1 is a radicle of a 2-hydroxynaphthalene coupled in the 1 position which may contain non-salt forming groups. They may be made by treating dyestuffs of formula <FORM:0740589/IV(c)/2> where R is H or an unsubstituted or substituted alkyl group containing 1 to 2 carbon atoms and R1, A and X are as above defined with the appropriate quantity of chromium-yielding agents, if necessary under conditions so that the alkoxy group in other position to the azo group is replaced by a hydroxyl group. Specified chromium-yielding agents are chromic formate, acetate and sulphate and alkali salts of chromosalicylic acid. Metallization is preferably effected at 120-160 DEG C in an aqueus medium containing wetting and dispersing agents such as turkey red oil or in alcohol. Chroming may also be effected in solvents such as ethylene glycol, ethylene glycol monomethyl or monoethyl ethers, formamide, dialkyl formamides or in a urea melt. The dyestuffs dye wool and synthetic polypeptide fibres in blue shades. Their water-solubility may be improved by admixture with compounds such as sodium carbonate, trisodium phosphate, soap and synthetic detergents. In examples chromium-containing complexes are obtained from the following dyestuffs:-1-amino-2, 5 - bis - hydroxyethoxybenzene --> (1) b -napthol (2) 6-bromo-2-hydroxynaphthalene, (3) 2-hydroxynaphthalene-7- and -8-sulphonic acid dimethylamides and (4) 6-and 7-methoxy-2-hydroxy-naphthalene and the diazo-component of (1) may also be 4-chloro-1-amino - 2, 5 - bis - hydroxethoxybenzene.
