Abstract
740,349. Gyroscopic apparatus. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Ltd. Feb. 23, 1950 [March 24, 1949], No. 8071/49. Class 97 (3). In a gyroscope apparatus the rotor is completely enclosed in a casing which is immersed in mercury inside a closed follow-up frame and the casing is supported in the container so as to have angular freedom about two axes intersecting at the centre of buoyancy of the sensitive element. As shown, Fig. 2, the rotor 15 is completely enclosed in the casing 9, the hollow centre section 12, 13 of which forms a support for the rotor bearing. The casing is immersed in the mercury 23 carried in follow-up frame 2 and is located and pivoted to the frame by rod 25, one end of which is bolted to 2 and the other end of which carries a universal joint 40 so as to permit limited relative movement of 2 and 9 about two perpendicular axes. Relative displacement between 2 and 9 is detected by magnetic pickoffs, e.g. 6, which effect energization of servomotors 7 and 8 to restore normal alignment of 2 and 9. The electric torque motors 57, 58 are fitted to apply precessional torques to the case 9 about axis AB and the axis perpendicular to AB and the rotor spin axis. The temperature of the frame 2 is maintained constant automatically by coils 41, 42. Specification 740,350 is referred to.
