Abstract
In a process of forming a phosphate coating on a metal surface by immersion of the surface in an aqueous acidic phosphate solution, the solution is subjected to vibrations of ultrasonic frequency. The vibrations may be applied by fixing a vibrating device to the underside of the tank containing the solution, e.g. a diaphragm may be held in position across a hole in the bottom of the tank by a casing containing an electrically actuated vibrator covered in oil, the vibrations being transmitted through the oil to the diaphragm, or a quartz crystal subjected to an alternating voltage may be put in contact with the diaphragm. The use of manganese phosphate and zinc phosphate solutions vibrated at 400 kilocycles are described by way of example.
