Abstract

739,980. Rubber springs; combined draft and buffing gear. MINER, Inc., W. H. April 20, 1954 [May 4, 1953; March 25, 1954], No. 11312/54. Classes 103 (5) and 108 (3). A railway draft gear comprises a column of resilient units D engaged by pressure transmitting means B, C, E, within top and bottom guides 16 (Fig. 8), and side guides 18 (Fig. 6), each unit D comprising a pair of plates 30, 31 to which is bonded a mass 32 of rubber, means 36, 37 for keeping the units centred on the longitudinal axis of the gear, and means 39 engaging the units and guides for preventing the column from being moved laterally under load. The arrangement is such that the rubber is loaded in compression only, and molecular movement only of the rubber occurs, the movement being outwardly from the axis of the column to flow into peripheral spaces 33. The pressure transmitting means comprises a loadreceiving wedge B which acts on three V- shaped, cross-section wedges C, having surfaces 27 which coact frictionally with corresponding tapered surfaces 22 of an outer housing A. The wedges C act through a member E on the first unit D. The means 36, 37 comprise projections and seats in the rubber which engage corresponding seats and projections in the plates 30, 31. Projections in the plate 30 at the extreme left, engage recesses in the member E, and recesses in the plate 31 to the extreme right, engage projections in a backing member H. The guide means 39 comprises flanges 39, 41, 42 and 43, on spacing and end members E, F, G and H. The flange 43 has apertures 46 which can be aligned with apertures 21 in the housing A. Pins 47 can then be inserted to retain the spring in a loaded position. An end plate 15 of the housing A can then be assembled as shown in Fig. 8.
