Abstract

In a self-sealing tyre or inner tube (see Group XXXIV) the p puncture-sealant layer is comprised of a heat-reacted product of (a) 100 parts of butyl rubber; (b) from 0.2 to 2.5 parts of a 2,6-dimethylol-4-substituted phenol or a resinous self-condensate thereof; and (c) from 0.1 to 5 parts of a heavy metal halide. Specified iso-olefins are isobutylene and ethyl methyl ethylene and specified diolefins, isoprene, butaprene, butadiene, piperylene, 1-2- or 1-3- or 1-4-or 2-3-dimethyl, or 1-ethyl, -butadiene. The preferred (b) constituent is a 2,6-dimethylol-4-lower alkyl phenol; the 4-substituent is particularly tertiary-butyl or tertiary-octyl, but may also be methyl, dodecyl, phenyl, benzoyl, cyclohexyl, or alpha, alpha-dimethyl benzoyl. Specified (c) constituents are tin, iron, aluminium, chromium, nickel, cobalt, manganese, copper or zinc chlorides, aluminium bromide or fluoride, and stannic iodide. Suitable fillers and plasticizers are respectively carbon black, clay, mica, calcium carbonate, zinc oxide, diatomaceous earth, wood flour, precipitated hydrated silica or calcium silicate, and polybutene and paracoumarone-indene resin, mineral oils or rosin oil.
