Abstract

739,436. Drawing sheet plastic to form containers &c. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. Feb. 16, 1954 [April 6, 1953], No. 4485/54. Class 87 (2). A thin sheet (e.g. 0.05 inches thick) of a plastic material which normally ruptures or thins unevenly when drawn (e.g. polyethylene, polyvinylidene chloride) is adhered to a cured elastic rubber or synthetic rubber sheet 2, less than 0.05 inches thick by pressing between flat platens 3 and 4 (see Fig. 1). The resulting laminate is heated, in the case of polyethylene, to 210- 230‹ F. and drawn to the desired shape, after which it is cooled and the rubber stripped from the shaped plastic. When drawing polyethylene the initial laminate may be formed by drawing a vacuum at the interface between the polyethylene and the rubber. The face of the rubber sheet adjacent the plastic sheet may have a coating of a silicone oil. Gas under pressure may be used to force the laminate into conformity with a mould, and vacuum within the mould may be employed in addition, or it may be drawn as in Fig. 3 in which the plug 13 forces the sheet 1, 2 held by C-clamps 12 to the dotted line position. "Snap-back" drawing methods in which the sheet laminate is deformed by differential gas pressure beyond the shape desired and the gas pressure adjusted to allow the sheet to retract into conformity with an inserted shape may also be used or a "leader plug" forming operation in which a plug is used to push the sheet into a mould and differential gas pressure then used to carry the sheet beyond the plug into conformity with the interior of the mould. In an example, a polyethylene hemisphere 4 inches in diameter was drawn from a sheet of polyethylene as follows: a cured sheet of gum stock rubber 0.02 inches thick was affixed to a sheet of polyethylene 0.02 inches thick and the assembly was heated to 210‹ F. and drawn by vacuum to hemispherical shape, cooled, and the rubber sheet stripped from the shell. The invention may be applied to making such hollow articles as shoes, one-piece containers, to drawing very thin sheets from thicker ones produced in a calender or extruder or to expanding plastic tubes to form linings inside pipes.
