739,368. Cables. BONDON, L. A. Feb. 1, 1954, No. 2901/54. Class 36. In a coaxial transmission line comprising hollow inner and outer conductors 11, 10 separated by radially disposed spacers, each spacing assembly comprises a short cylindrical conducting member 12 having its outer surface in engagement with the inner surface of the inner conductor 11 and having an external circumferential channel 13 intermediate its ends, and radially disposed spacers 14 maintained perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the member 12 and which extend through the wall of the inner conductor so that their inner ends project into the channel 13 and their outer ends engage the inner surface of the outer conductor 10, the depth of the channel 13 being such that the characteristic impedance of the line at an insulating assembly is equalized with the characteristic impedance of the line in the intervening air-spaced portions. The member 12, which is preferably of the same material as the inner conductor 11 may be formed with a wide circumferential channel 18 intermediate its ends, in the base of which channel 13 is formed. The spacers 14, which are preferably of polytetrafluoroethylene, may be cylindrical, having concave inner ends which fit the bottom of channel 13, wedge-shaped outer ends which are in intimate contact with the inner surface of the outer conductor, and an axial bore 25. An insulating pin 16 passing through member 12 has each of its projecting ends extending into the bore of one of the spacers 14 to maintain the latter in position. The member 12 may have circumferential recesses 21 filled with soft silver solder 22, so that after positioning the member 12 within the conductor 11 it may be soldered in place. The assemblies are longitudinally spaced at any desired interval and disposed on the inner conductor with any desired angular relationship between the spacers 14 of adjacent assemblies (90 degrees in the illustrated embodiment).
