Abstract

<PICT:0738929/III/1> <PICT:0738929/III/2> In a machine for welding or cladding metals or non-metals by the use of a rod of fusible material, a torch for heating the work and the fusible material is reciprocated horizontally and vertically with respect to the end of the rod and in a plane transverse to the direction of relative movement of the work. The machine may be used for cladding plastics with plastics. A portable machine is pivotably mounted on a carriage 9 or on casters which run alongside or on the work 82. The wheels of the carriage 9 are driven through a variable speed unit 25 and a flexible shaft 22 by an electric motor 5 which also drives through gears 69, 70, a cam 67. A pair of torches 3 are mounted on one end of a parallel motion link mechanism the other end of which carries a cam follower 77 engaging a slot in the cam 67. The torches 3 move in a rectangular path in a vertical plane and during their upper and lower transverse movements pass over the fusible rods 48 and the work 82 respectively. The rods 48 are gravity fed and supported in sleeves 47 having inspection slots 51 and integral or removable winged ends 50 provided with projections 49 supporting the rods 48. Each sleeve 47 is adjustable by a nut 45 within a collar 41 secured by a universal clamp 40 to the frame of the machine. The carriage 9 may be detached and secured to a bracket 8 to run on overhead rails. Alternatively the machine may be fixed and the work moved.
