11 Claims.
This invention relates to a carving apparatus. The general object of the invention is to provide a novel carving apparatus which will permit an operator to carve a block of wood, metal, or other material to a configuration corresponding to a pattern over which the operator moves a tracer point.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel support means for the cutting tool and tracing member of a carving apparatus.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel support for the tracing member of a carving apparatus.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel counterbalance for the working head of a carving apparatus.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation showing my improved carving apparatus;

Referring to the drawings by reference characters, I have shown my invention as embodied in a carving apparatus which is indicated generally at I9. As shown the apparatus is mounted on a frame indicated generally at II and which includes vertical corner posts l2 connected by upper, lower and intermediate transverse members l3 and by a pair of upper longitudinal members I 4 and a lower longitudinal member I5. The upper intermediate transverse members l3 support a work table 16 while the lower intermediate members I3 support a pattern holding table H. The tables I 6 and I? may be provided with longitudinal slots l8 through which clamping members are inserted to hold the work l9 and the pattern in place.
The frame is preferably made of wood and includes vertical supports 2| arranged on the member l5 and engaging a transverse member 22 beneath the table I1. Diagonal braces 23 connect the member l5 and the lower intermediate member I3.
The upper longitudinal members l4 are spaced apart and are preferably rectangular so that they provide upper track surfaces 24 and inner track surfaces 25. The upper track surfaces 24 are engaged by rollers 26 mounted on shafts 26 which are supported on a carriage 2'! which moves between the members M. The carriage 21 includes rollers 28 mounted on vertical shafts 29. The rollers 28 engage the inner track surfaces 25 so that the carriage is supported and guided by the rollers 26 and 28.
The carriage 21 supports a depending rod 38 which rotatably mounts a support frame indicated generally at 3i. (Figs. 4 and 5). This support frame 3| includes spaced side members 32, an upper member 33 and a bottom member 34 with the members suitably joined together.
A support member 35 is arranged between the members 33 and 34 and on this support member I mount a front track member 36 and a rear track member 31.
A working head is arranged between the side members 32. This working head includes converging sides 38 and 39, a front end 40 and a rear end 4|. The working head is adapted to move vertically up and down and is provided with brackets 42 which support rollers 43 engaging the track member 36. The working head is also provided with brackets 44 which sup port rollers 45 which engage the track member 31.
The sides 32 are also provided with brackets 46 which support rollers 41 and these rollers 41 engage track members 48 mounted on the sides 38 and 39 of the working head. As shown in Fig. 3, the track members 33 and 3'! are of such a length that they may move between the sides 38 and 39 of the working head.
On the front end 40 of the working head I show a bearing block 49 which supports a shaft 50 which in turn supports a chuck 5| adapted to hold a cutting tool 52, A shaft 5!) supports a pulley 53 adapted to be driven by a belt 54' from a pulley 55 mounted on the armature shaft 56 of a motor 51. The base 58 of the motor 51 is held by bolts 59 on the rear end 4| of the working head. The working head includes a switch housing 60 with a switch handle 6| thereon and with a lead 62 for supplying current to the motor. 1
In order to provide a counter-balance for the working head, each side member 32 is provided with an upper pair of aligned outwardly projecting shafts 63 and with a lower pair of aligned outwardly projecting shafts 64. On the shafts 63 I pivot bars 65. The bars 65 extend forwardly and are connected by a shaft 66 which supports a counterweight 61. The bars 65 also extend rearwardly and are connected beyond the rear end 4| by a rod 68. The upper rear edge of the bars 65 are engaged by rollers 69 mounted on pins I carried by the Working head.
Each of the shafts 64 supports a lower bar II. The lower'bars II are connected by a shaft I2 which supports a counterweight 13. The front ends of the bars II are connected by a crossbar I4 which extends through slots I5 in the sides 38 and 39 in the working head. cross bar I4slides along a guide plate 11 mounted on each side 38 and 39. The counterweights tracing point mounted on said working head and disposed coaxial with said chuck.

The working head is provided with a shield I8 which may be made of sheet metal and is held in place by fastening members I9. The shield I8 surrounds the pulley 53 and the chuck 5|.
Mounted on the front end of the working head I show a downwardly directed loop mem ber 80 which surrounds the work table 16. A fitting 8| is secured on the loop member 80 as bywelding at 82, The fitting 8| includes are- I,

The loop member 80 isprovided with a pair of spaced brackets 84 held in place by bolts 85. The brackets are connected to a brace member 86 disposed on both sides of the pattern holding table H and extending .rearwardly and secured to the end member 4| by L-shaped bracket 81. The brackets 81 are held in place by bolts. 88. The loop member 86 is braced by a diagonal member 89 secured at 90.to each side 38and 39 of the working head. The lower end of each brace 89 is secured to the loop member 86 as by a bolt 9l.
In the use of my device the work I9 and the pattern 20 are secured in place by suitable means not shown. The tracer point 83 being in place, the cutting tool 52 is adjusted to the proper vertical position and theswitch 6| is adjusted to start the motor. The tracing point is then moved over the pattern, and as it is moved, the cutting tool 52 moves also so that the work I9 is carved to correspond to the pattern 20.'
The tracing point and cutting ,tool rotate about the vertical axis of the rod .30 and also move simultaneously up and down with the working head on which they are mounted. The counterweights 61 and I3 are so proportioned that very little effort is needed to raise and lower the tracing point 83.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that I have invented a novel carving apparatus which can be economically manufactured and which is highly effective for its inport frame, a chuck rotatably mounted on said working head, means to drive said chuck, and a 3. In a carving apparatus, a standard, a pattern support on said standard, a work support on said standard, a track member on said standard, a carriage slidable on said track member, a support frame, vertical means pivotally supporting said support frame on said carriage and supporting said frame, a working head vertically slidable on said support frame, a pair of aligned shafts on said support frame, a bar pivotally mounted on each shaft, said bars extending forwardly and rearwardly of said shafts, a counterweight supported at one end of said bars, brace means connecting the other ends of said bars, means on said working head and slidably engaging said bars, a second pair of aligned shafts on said side members, otherbars mounted on each of said second shafts, said other bars extending rearwardly from said second shafts, a counterweight mounted on one end of said other bars, means connecting the other ends of said other bars, said last mentioned means including portions slidably engaging said working head, a chuck rotatably mounted on said working head, means to drive said chuck. and a tracing point mounted on said working head and disposed co-axial with said chuck.

In a carving apparatus, a standard, a pattern support on said standard, a work support on said standard, track members on said standard, a carriage slidable on said track members, a support frame supported on said carriage for movement about a vertical axis, a working head vertically slidable on said support frame, a pair of aligned shafts on said support frame, a bar pivotally mounted on each shaft, said bars extending forwardly and rearwardly of said shafts. a counterweight supported at one end of said bars, brace means connecting the other ends of said bars, guide means on said working head and slidably engaging said bars, a second pair of aligned shafts on said side members, other bars mounted n each of said second shafts, said other bars extending rearwardly from said second shafts. a counterweight mounted on one end of said other bars, means connecting the other end of said other bars. said last mentioned means including portions slidably engaging said working head, a
chuck rotatably mounted on said working head,
means to drive said chuck, a loop member mounted on the forward part of said working head and including a lower portion beneath said work support, a tracing point on said lower portion and disposed co-axial with said chuck, a brace member engaging said loop member and extending rearwardly therefrom and connected to the rear portion of said working head and supports engaging said brace member and the forward portion of said working head.

In a carving apparatus. a standard, a pattern support on said standard, a work support on said standard, a track member on said standard, a carriage slidably mounted on said track members, a depending support frame pivotally supported on said carriage, a hollow working head slidably mounted on said support frame, rollers mounted on said support frame and engaging said head to prevent lateral movement thereof, a guide member mounted on said support frame,
said guide member including spaced vertical track surfaces, rollers mounted on said working head and engaging said vertical track surfaces to prevent front and rear movement of said working head, a pair of aligned outwardly extending upper shafts on said support frame, a bar pivotally mounted on each shaft, said bars extending forwardly and rearwardly of said shafts, a counterweight supported on the forward ends ofsaid bars, brace means connecting the rear ends of said bars, rollers on the rear portion of said working head and engaging said bars, a second lower set of outwardly extending aligned shafts on said support frame, a lower bar mounted on each of said second shafts, said lower bars extending rearwardly and forwardly from said second shafts, a counterweight mounted on the rear ends of said second bars, means connecting the front ends of said second bars, said last mentioned means extending through said working head and including portions slidably engaging said working head, a chuck rotatably mounted on the forward portion of said working head, a motor mounted on said working head, means whereby said motor drives said chuck, a loop member mounted on the forward part of said working head and including a lower portion beneath said work support, and a tracing point on said lower portion and disposed co-axial with said chuck.

In a carving apparatus, a standard, a pattern support on said standard, a work support on said standard, a track member on said standard, a carriage slidably mounted on said track members, a support frame pivotally supported on said carriage, a hollow working head slidable within said support frame, rollers mounted on said support frame and engaging said head to prevent lateral movement thereof, a guide member mounted on said support frame and disposed within said working head, said guide member including spaced vertical track surfaces, rollers mounted on said working head and engaging said vertical track surfaces to prevent front and rear movement of said working head, a pair of aligned outwardly extending upper shafts on said support frame, a bar pivotally mounted on each shaft, said bars extending forwardly and rearwardly of said shafts, a counterweight supported on the forward ends of said bars, brace means connecting the rear ends of said bars, rollers on the rear portion of said working head and engaging said bars, a second lower set of outwardly extending aligned shafts on said support frame, a lower bar mounted on each of said second shafts, said lower bars extending rearwardly and forwardly from said second shafts, a counterweight mounted on the rear ends of said second bars, means connecting the front ends of said second bars, said last mentioned means extending through said working head and including portions slidably engaging said working head, a chuck rotatably mounted on the forward portion of said working head, a motor mounted on said working head, means whereby said motor drives said chuck, a loop member mounted on the forward part of said working head and including a lower portion beneath said work support, a tracing point on said lower portion and disposed co-axial with said chuck, a brace member engaging said loop member and extending rearwardly therefrom and connected to the rear portion of said working head and supports engaging said brace member and the forward portion of said working head.

In ,a carving apparatus, a standard, a pattern support on said standard, a work support on said standard, a pair of spaced horizontal track members on said standard, each track member including a vertical track surface and a horizontal track surface, a carriage, rollers mounted on said carriage and engaging said track surfaces, a depending rod mounted on said carriage, a support frame including spaced side members, an upper member and a bottom member, pivotally supported on said rod, a working head, rollers mounted on said side members and engaging said head to prevent lateral movement thereof, a guide member mounted on said upper and lower frame members and disposed within said frame, said guide member including spaced vertical track surfaces at each side thereof, rollers mounted on said Working head and engaging said last mentioned vertical track surfaces to prevent front and rear movement of said working head, a pair of aligned, outwardly extending, upper shafts on said side members, a bar pivotally mounted on each shaft, said bars extending forwardly and rearwardly of said shafts, a
counterweight supported on said bars, brace means connecting the rear ends of said bars,
outwardly extending aligned shafts on said side members, a lower bar mounted on each of said second shafts, said lower bars extending rearwardly and forwardly from said second shafts, a counterweight mounted on said second bars, means connecting the front ends of said second bars, said last mentioned means extending through said Working head, a chuck rotatably mounted on said working head, a motor mounted on said working head, means whereby said motor drives said chuck, a loop member mounted on the forward part of said Working head and including a lower portion beneath said work support, a tracing point on said lower portion and disposed co-axial with said chuck, and a brace member engaging said loop member and extending rearwardly therefrom and connected to the rear portion of said working head.
