Abstract

738,349. Stencilling. STOFFEL, M. July 17, 1953 [July 21, 1952], No. 19943/53. Class 100(2). In a method of printing on a web of cloth, paper, &c. by means of stencils, the web is bonded to an endless conveyer which is fed intermittently in steps each equal to the length or section printed by each stencil multiplied by twice the number of stencils in use, to carry the web past the stencils and their coacting tables and through a drying chamber; stencilling takes place during the periods when the conveyer is stationary and the arrangement is such that any particular section is printed once only during a complete passage of the conveyer and a section adjacent thereto only in another passage. The web of cloth, paper or plastic to be stencilled is bonded with an easily-removable binder to an endless conveyer 12 passing between three stationary stencils 7 and printing tables 8, and through a drying-chamber C including an airdehumidifying unit 14. The conveyer is driven by rollers 9, 10, 16 and by toothed conveyers 6, all the parts being driven by an electric motor D. The web is passed intermittently through the printing assembly B in steps equal to six pattern repeat lengths, i.e. twice the number of repeat lengths as stencils used. In the initial position of the web the stencils are positioned above the 1st, 3rd and 5th repeats. During the first passage of the web, only the first stencil is used, and prints on the 1st repeat position only. During the second passage, the first stencil prints on the 2nd position. During the next two passages, the first two stencils are used, and during the next two, all three are used. During the seventh and eighth passages, the first stencil is omitted, and during the last two passages only the third stencil is used, after which each position will have been printed on once by each stencil. However, additional stencils may be used by replacing each stencil which has completed its work. Thus, after the sixth passage, the first stencil can be replaced by a fourth, and so on. For example, if twelve stencils are used, three at a time, there will be required twenty-eight passages. If only one stencil is used, only two passages are required. Specification 510,788 is referred to.
